I first met Amani Al Shehri at the Taste of London 2024 festival in Regent’s Park, where she was passionately representing Saudi Arabian culture. As a young graduate student pursuing her PhD in the UK, Amani stood out—not just for her academic excellence but for her dedication to promoting her country’s rich heritage on an international stage.

Before meeting Amani, my understanding of Saudi Arabia was shaped primarily by media narratives that often focus on specific aspects of the country. I had little idea of the vast cultural, artistic, and natural beauty that exists within the Kingdom, the vibrant arts scene, the breathtaking landscapes, the deep-rooted customs, and the incredible diversity across regions, from the bustling cities to the serene beauty of Asir, now emerging as a global tourism destination.

Meeting Amani reinforced the vital role international students play in bridging cultures, enriching both academic discourse and global cultural exchange. In this feature, we explore Amani’s journey, insights, and experiences as a Saudi student in the UK, highlighting the importance of education, identity, and diplomacy in shaping international understanding.

A Passion for Linguistics and Cultural Exchange

For Amani Al Shehri, pursuing graduate studies in the UK was more than an academic choice—it was a strategic step toward advancing linguistic research and cultural diplomacy. With a deep passion for sociolinguistics, she set out to explore how languages evolve in urban environments through her PhD project, Dialect Contact and Koineisation in Riyadh. “The UK is renowned for its research excellence, particularly in sociolinguistics, making it the ideal place to develop my project. I wanted to study linguistic changes in a diverse and rigorous academic setting, and the UK has provided the perfect environment for that.” She said

Beyond research, Amani saw an opportunity to engage in cultural exchange, ensuring Saudi heritage is not only represented but also celebrated on an international stage.

From Academia to Leadership: A Dual Mission

Studying abroad has shaped Amani’s perspective both academically and personally. Her experience has strengthened her critical thinking, research methodologies, and leadership skills, particularly through her role as Vice President of the Saudi Students Club in London. “Living in the UK has deepened my appreciation for both my own culture and the global community, reinforcing my belief in the power of cultural exchange.” Said Amani.

Her leadership extends beyond student circles—she has taken part in major initiatives, including:

  • London Book Fair 2024 (Organizer with the Saudi Ministry of Culture)
  • Taste of London 2024 (Saudi Pavilion, Culinary Arts Commission)
  • World Travel Market 2024 (Logistics Manager, Saudi Theatre & Performing Arts Commission)
  • Saudi National Day celebrations at Lancaster House and the Saudi Cultural Bureau

Amani is also working on developing linguistic and cultural training programs to help international professionals engage more effectively with Saudi Arabia’s growing business landscape.

Contributing to Saudi Arabia’s Vision

Amani’s aspirations extend far beyond her PhD. She sees herself playing a key role in Saudi Arabia’s education, linguistic research, and cultural diplomacy:

  1. Education & Linguistic Research– By studying dialect contact in Riyadh, Amani aims to contribute to language policy and Arabic education strategies. Her research could shape how Arabic dialects are taught and preserved in urban settings.
  2. Cultural Diplomacy– Through her involvement in global exhibitions and international dialogue, she hopes to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s cultural presence on the world stage.

Overcoming Challenges and Giving Back

Like many international students, Amani has faced challenges balancing academic responsibilities with cultural engagement. However, through strong time management, teamwork, and resilience, she has successfully navigated these demands. Her advice to future Saudi students looking to study abroad:

  • Engage beyond academics – Take part in cultural events and networking opportunities.
  • Stay open-minded – Share your culture while embracing new experiences.
  • Manage time wisely – Balance coursework, personal growth, and extracurricular activities.

Cultural Ambassador: Sharing Saudi Heritage in the UK

Amani considers cultural exchange a vital aspect of international education:“I see myself as a cultural ambassador—actively showcasing Saudi heritage while also learning from and appreciating other cultures.” She said, and we completely agree.

One of the most fascinating Amani has done during her studies in the UK, is introducing Saudi traditions, cuisine, and arts to international audiences through her work at major UK events. People in the UK are often curious about: Saudi hospitality and traditions, the Kingdom’s social and economic transformation, and Saudi cuisine—especially at massive events such as Taste of London!

Addressing Cultural Misconceptions

Having encountered misconceptions about women’s roles in Saudi society, Amani actively works to correct outdated narratives. “I address these by sharing my own experiences and highlighting Saudi Arabia’s progress in education, employment, and cultural fields.” She said.

Amani believes, and we agree, that international students are instrumental in fostering mutual understanding:

“Through academic discussions, cultural events, and professional engagement, we help dispel misconceptions, strengthen ties between nations, and create opportunities for long-term collaboration.”

The Lasting Impact of Studying Abroad

Amani’s experience in the UK has shaped her outlook on work ethics, collaboration, and cultural diplomacy. She highlights key lessons she will carry forward:

  • The value of structured professionalism
  • The importance of independent research and critical thinking
  • The power of diversity and inclusion in driving innovation

Even after graduation, Amani plans to continue serving as a cultural ambassador by:

  • Engaging in international collaborations to promote Saudi culture and education
  • Mentoring future international students
  • Participating in diplomatic and cultural initiatives to strengthen Saudi-UK relations

A Future Shaped by Knowledge and Cultural Dialogue

Amani Al Shehri is more than a researcher—she is a connector of cultures, a voice for Saudi heritage, and a leader shaping the next wave of global engagement. Through her academic and cultural endeavors, she embodies the spirit of education as a bridge between nations.

Her journey serves as an inspiration for students and professionals alike, proving that knowledge, resilience, and cultural understanding can truly transform the world. We wish her all the best in her studies and we look forward to her promising future.
